Obituary

Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Wendell Holmes Slaughenhaupt passed away at his home in Fisher, PA on February 5th, 2018 at the age of 87. He and his twin sister Winona Finotti were born March 19th, 1930 in Shippenville, PA, the son of the late Floy Adella (Sheatz) and William Riley Slaughenhaupt. Wendell grew up in Shippenville across from the B&O train station on what is now McBride Lane. After graduating from Shippenville High School, Wendell served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-1953 as an X-ray technician and then in the U.S. Army from 1964-1980 as a nurse anesthetist and member of the Army Nurse Corps. He served in Viet Nam from 1969-1970 with the 85th Evacuation Hospital near Phu Bai where he was instrumental in treating and saving battlefield casualties. He also served in Korea, Italy, Missouri, Texas, Colorado, Arizona and Oklahoma. After retiring from the Army he practiced anesthesia at Jameson Memorial Hospital in New Castle until 1996 where he was affectionately referred to as "The Sandman" by his colleagues. He graduated from Philadelphia Hospital School of Nursing in 1959, completed his anesthesia training at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA in 1961 and began his anesthesia career at Butler Memorial Hospital in Butler, PA. Wendell was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, a gifted craftsman, and a very talented wood worker. He enjoyed classical music, fine dining, making furniture, collecting guns, refinishing antique Mauser and Springfield rifles, stock making, reloading and shooting. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the National Rifle Association. Because of his wartime service treating the severely wounded, and his love for our men and women in uniform, he donated generously to both veteran service organizations and charities that supported wounded warriors. Wendell is survived by his loving wife Bonnie Slaughenhaupt of Fisher; and his four children, Elyse Douglas (Steve) of Bend, OR, Leanne Pope (David) of Monroe, UT, Eric Slaughenhaupt (Anna) of Rockport, MA and Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Karl Slaughenhaupt (Renee') of Richmond, KY. Of his four brothers and five sisters, he is survived only by his older brother, Gilbert "Gib" Slaughenhaupt, of Clarion. Wendell has three grandchildren, Ian Douglas, Gavin Douglas and Piper Slaughenhaupt. He was a devoted and generous father as well as a dog lover, leaving behind his faithful companion Toby. The family will receive visitors at Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street in Clarion from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, May 5th, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. with Lt. Col. Rev. Dr. Jonathan Bell officiating. Immediately following, Wendell's ashes will be laid to rest after being accorded full military honors next to his mother, for whom he had the greatest admiration and affection, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Shippenville.
