Stephen E.
Black
Sep 20, 1946 — Aug 6, 2026
Stephen E. Black, a devoted pastor, compassionate counselor, and loving family man, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026, at the age of 79, at Penn Highlands Clearfield Hospital due to natural causes. Born on September 20, 1946, in York County, Stephen spent his life bringing comfort and guidance to others through his faith and his work.
Stephen dedicated his career to serving others as both a pastor and a counselor. His journey in ministry led him to serve at the Church of God in Alliance, Ohio, New Bethlehem, PA, and Grampian, PA, where he touched countless lives with his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his congregation. Later, he extended his caring nature to the field of counseling, owning and operating New Song Counseling Services in Clearfield, PA for the last 20 years before retirement.
An avid outdoorsman, Stephen found joy and solace in nature, often spending time hunting and appreciating the beauty of the world around him. He was known not only for his love of the outdoors but also for being a good listener, a trait that endeared him to many and made him a cherished friend and confidant.
Stephen's legacy is deeply rooted in the lives of those he loved. He was a devoted father to his daughters Angela (Keith) Mitchell of Meadville and Tamara (Matt) Lerch of Shippenville, and his son Stephen (Helen) Black of Virginia. He adored his grandchildren: Matthew (Kaitlyn) Mitchell, Joshua Mitchell, Nathaniel Lerch, Evelyn Lerch, and Isaac Lerch, each of whom will carry forward his spirit of love and compassion. In addition, he will be sadly missed by his dog, Legacy.
Stephen is preceded in death by his parents, Paul Black and Dorothy Smith, who instilled in him the values of faith and service that guided his life's work. He is survived by his brothers Gary (Connie) Black of Carlisle and Dennis (Terry) Black of Aurora, OH, who shared in his journey and supported him throughout his life.
In remembering Stephen, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and love, forever grateful for the profound impact he had on the lives he touched. His spirit will continue to inspire and guide all those whose lives he influenced.
