Obituary

Sally Jane Ringland, age 74, of Clarion, passed away on February 27, 2018 at Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Sally was born on February 28, 1943 in West Allis, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of the late William Lyle and Florence Hazel (Horr) Ringland. Sally attended college at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana where she obtained both her bachelor's and master's degrees. She then arrived in Pennsylvania with an appointment to teach mathematics at the Venango Campus of Clarion University. She would eventually move to the main campus in Clarion and earn a full professorship and retire from that position. Sally was also a "professor of dulcimer," teaching many people the beauty of folk instruments. She was a member of the local group, Cluricaun. Sally played both the mountain dulcimer and the hammer dulcimer. She was also a member of the Clarion Dulcimer Club. Sally was well-known in local and regional folk musical circles and was proud to have been a workshop teacher in Ohio, West Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Sally was politically active. She was a member of the League of Women Voters for which she served as local treasurer up until her death. She was also a member of the National Organization for Women on the local level. She is survived by her brother, James Ringland and his wife Karen Ivy, of Oakland, California; her niece, Kristin Ringland, of Stockholm, Sweden; and a nephew, William Ringland, of Madison, Wisconsin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William Ringland; and her life partner, Lee Heilman. Memorial donations may be made in Sally's name to the Clarion Free Library, 644 Main Street, Clarion PA 16214 (ww.youseemore.com/cfl). Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street in Clarion where a celebration of Sally's life, complete with music, will be held on Tuesday, March 13, at 11:00 a.m. Friends and colleagues are encouraged to come, share, and remember.
