Ruth Audrey Kriebel celebrated her 95th birthday on Wednesday, February 28th, with a small family reception. The family is thankful for the memories made that day. Ruth, formerly of Clarion, passed away on Sunday, March 11th, at the Willows of Presbyterian SeniorCare in Oakmont.
Ruth was born on February 28, 1923 in Monroe, the only child to the late D. Freeman and Matilda Garris Exley. Ruth graduated from Knox High School in 1941. She was married to Edward G Kriebel on November 22, 1945 and he preceded her in death on December 28, 2010.
After graduating from high school, Ruth worked as a secretary for the Owens Illinois Glass Plant. That is where she met Ed shortly before he was drafted into World War II. They continued their relationship while he was overseas sharing many letters and pictures which Ruth cherished and kept with her throughout her life.
Ruth was a pioneer of her day. During the late 1950's, a time when most married women were housewives, Ruth owned and operated "The Shoe Shoppe" in downtown Clarion. After the closing of "The Shoe Shoppe", Ruth became a full time wife and mother. Over the years, Ruth loved to travel with her husband and family. She was a vivacious woman who enjoyed life to the fullest. Ruth was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.
Ruth is survived by three sons and their wives, James E and Penny, Gary A and Tracie, and Gregory R and Bridget Kriebel, all residing in the Clarion area. She is survived by six grandchildren living in Western Pennsylvania; Shane (Anna) Kriebel, Briana (Jeffrey) Banner, Brittany, Mackenzie, Joshua and Alexa Kriebel. Ruth has three grandchildren in Florida, Nicholas, Christian and Caitlin Kriebel and is also survived by 7 great grandchildren.
Ruth was a very caring person and was always ready to help those in need. Over the years, Ed and Ruth supported the local community including the Clarion University where there is a scholarship that continues to help students from Clarion County with a financial need. More recently, the Edward G and Ruth Kriebel Charitable Trust was established to continue this legacy. Because both Ed and Ruth believed in remaining physically active, The Charitable Trust was a lead supporter of the Clarion County YMCA capital campaign for the building of a new Clarion County YMCA facility which is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2018. Ruth was a long time member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Knox.
The Family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Clarion County YMCA Capital Campaign, 15952 Route 322, Suite 1, Clarion, PA , or the Edward G Kriebel Family Scholarship, Clarion University Foundation, 841 Wood Street, Clarion, PA.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Goble Funeral Home, 330 Wood Street, Clarion, PA 16214. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the Goble Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Clarion Cemetery.
