Obituary

Raymond Eugene Cupples, Sr., 101, of Clarion passed from this life Sunday, January 6, 2013, in Brookville. Born December 4, 1911, in Brocton, NY and raised in Luthersburg, PA, he was the son of John F. and Verna (Snyder) Cupples. After graduating from Brady High School, of which he was the oldest living graduate, Raymond served an apprenticeship as a barber and worked in the local general store. Raymond was married on July 19, 1939, to Candace (Reiter) Cupples, his loving wife of 69 years, who preceded him in death in 2009. They had two children, Raymond, Jr., and Carol Smed. Mr. Cupples and his wife moved to Philadelphia at the beginning of World War II and lived there for 33 years before returning to Clarion in 1974. He was a country boy at heart and promised Candace hed live at least 10 years after retiring if she agreed to move back to Western Pennsylvania. He far surpassed the 10 year promise! Raymond, Sr. worked for General Electric for 33 years. During WWII he was held in Philadelphia to supervise 22 women doing wartime work. While living there he and his family attended St. Johns Lutheran Church in Folcroft, PA. He served on the church council for many years where he served as property chairman. Upon retiring from General Electric he moved to Limestone Twp. He is most proud of the home he built himself with family help on Forest Drive. In addition to being a loving husband, a devoted servant of God, he was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather whose spirit of strength of family will be missed greatly. His outstanding garden and the produce he shared with friends and neighbors were well known and the trees, fruits and vegetables he nurtured will continue to remind everyone of his love. Raymond enjoyed working outdoors, carving wood, restoring & caning furniture and playing pinochle. He was also active in the community. He was a member of the Limestone Twp. Volunteer Fire Company. He also served as an ambulance driver while his brother, Fred Cupples of Clarion, was an EMT for Clarion Ambulance Service. Raymond attended Grace Lutheran Church, Clarion where he was an active member. In addition, he and his wife quietly operated a safe house for mothers and children in need. Raymond is survived by a son, Raymond Jr ., and his wife, Bonnie, of Clarion; a daughter, Carol Cupples Smed and her husband, Jan, of Winter Springs, Fla; five grandchildren , Pauline Cupples, Amy C. Piquette (Nick), Christian Smed (Laura), Carrie C. Fiorina (John) and Susan S. Fitzhugh (Tim); seven great-grandchildren, Nichole, Evan, Jacob, Caroline, Sean, Owen and Will; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Special thanks to his recently extended family of caregivers at Laurelbrooke Assisted Living of Brookville and Clarion/Forest VNA Hospice Care. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 12th in Grace Lutheran Church in Clarion with Pastor Harold O. Jacobson and Rev. Deborah Jacobson officiating. Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, at Trinity Reformed Cemetery in Troutville. The family suggests that donations be made to Grace Lutheran Church (421 Madison Ave., Clarion, PA 16214) in lieu of flowers.
