Obituary

Peter Hamilton Nachtwey, age 90, formerly of the Clarion area, passed away on February 2, 2017, at the University Hospital Geauga Medical Center near Cleveland, Ohio. Pete was born on January 25, 1927 in Rochester, NY, he was the son of Peter and Edith (Wood) Nachtwey. Following high school, Peter proudly served as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He married the former Rosemary Brinkman in 1954 and they began their life together in Rochester. He obtained a Master's in Education from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. He had a wide-ranging academic career, holding various senior positions at the University of Rochester, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Carnegie-Mellon University before following his passion for teaching and counseling. He began teaching at the high school level before spending several decades as a Professor of Psychology at Clarion University of Pennsylvania. Pete was a tireless worker, spending his free time on endless home improvement projects, and participating in the sports his children and grandchildren enjoyed. He was a devoted father and grandfather, taking great pleasure in their company. Peter and Rosemary spent a magical final two weeks together. In Pete's words, "How did we get so lucky?" Pete is survived by his wife, Rosemary; his children, Peter (Diane), Donald (Jennette); Anne Schneckloth (Rick), Paul (Megan), and Jay (Alissa); his grandchildren, Peter, Molly, Sadie, Andrew and Gavin; his brother Dick, and his sister Barb. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Paul, Doris, Laura, James and Marguerite. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made the University Hospital Geauga Medical Center, Harrington Heart and Vascular Capital Fund, 13207 Ravenna Road, Chardon OH 44024. Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory in Clarion. Peter's family will receive visitors at the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street in Clarion on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 from 10-11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Father Monty Sayers officiating. Interment will be in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Clarion.
