Obituary

Joseph Laverne Michael, 90, of Clarion, passed away peacefully at home with his family after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, September 1, 2015. Born December 7, 1924 in Fairview, PA, Joe was the son of James Everett and Florence (Harmon) Michael. He was a graduate of Fairview Township Karns City High School. He served in the United State Army from 1943-46 as a member of the 753rd Field Artillery in central Europe. After WWII, Joe attended the Western Pennsylvania Horological Institute in Pittsburgh on the GI Bill where he studied watch making and engraving. Upon graduation, Joe worked at Dave Kaufmans Jewelry Store in Clarion from1950-1959. In 1959, Joe began working at Owens Illinois in the forming department, where he worked until his retirement in 1987, with 28 years of service. He also continued repairing watches and clocks at home. Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and doing carpentry projects and home repairs in his spare time, but above all, Joe loved spending time with his friends and taking care of his family. He especially enjoyed family visits to Arizona, Virginia and Kentucky to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He married the former Anita Mae Mortimer on September 28, 1949 at her parents home in Petrolia. They lived in Oil City when first married, but moved to Clarion where they have lived in their same home since July 1951. They celebrated 65 years of marriage last September with their family. One of Joes greatest joys was being a member of First Presbyterian Church in Clarion for over 63 years, where he served as a deacon and an elder. Joe is survived by his wife, Anita M. Michael of Clarion, a son, Tom Michael of Smithfield, VA, and two daughters, Ruth Ann (Mikki) Gries and her husband Jim of Tucson, AZ, and Mary M. Jones of Somerset, KY. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Megan Lynne Jones of Whitley City, KY and Andrew Michael Jones and his wife, Megan of Strunk, KY, and three great-grandchildren: Kinslee and Kason Jones of Strunk, KY and Madison Garland of Whitley City, KY. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother Gerald, two older brothers, Everett and Arthur, and two sisters, Mrs. Marie McElhatten and Mrs. Elsie Kelly. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Clarion (www.clarionfirstpresby.org) or the Clarion Cancer Center (www.clarionhospital.org). Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street in Clarion where visitation will be held from 3 to 7 pm on Friday, September 4th. An additional visitation will be held from 10:30 - 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 5th at the First Presbyterian Church, 700 Wood Street, in Clarion. Military honors will be accorded by members of the Honor Guard from American Legion Post 66 of Clarion at 11:00 a.m. at the church to be immediately followed by funeral services with Rev. James Dietrich officiating. Interment will be in the Bear Creek Cemetery in Petrolia.
