Obituary

Joseph R. Ewing, Sr., of Lucinda, died Thursday, August 22, at home, surrounded by loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 77 years old.

Born January 16,1947 in Bradford, PA, he was the son Paul C. and Ada M. Ewing. In 1964 he graduated from Bradford High School.

Joe served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served his country in Vietnam from 1967-1968, where he was awarded the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and multiple sharpshooter badges.

After separating from the Army, he was hired by Bell of Pennsylvania. He worked primarily out of Bradford and Clarion as a cable splicer. In the year 2000, he retired from Bell Atlantic/Verizon after 30 years.

Joe was an outdoorsman, hunter, and wildlife conservationist. He was the founder and chairman of the Big Woods Hare Hunters of the Allegheny and enjoyed training beagles and hunting with friends and family. He was also an outdoors writer, with numerous articles published in Hounds & Hunting, Better Beagling, and The Rabbit Hunter magazines.

On April 29, 1972, he married the former Brenda Wolford, and she survives. They enjoyed 52 wonderful years of marriage.

Joe was a family man who loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Brenda, of Lucinda.; a daughter Michelle Murray, and her significant other, Chris Guntrum, of Clarion, a son, Joseph Ewing, Jr. and his wife Laura Ewing, of Tampa, Florida; five beloved grandchildren, Alayna, William, and Brayden Murray, of Clarion and Alexander and Thomas Ewing of Tampa, Florida; a brother Lawrence Ewing of Houston, Texas and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald Ewing.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, at the Goble Funeral Home, 330 Wood Street, Clarion, where funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. with Barbara Ramous officiating.

Interment will be made in Mt. Tabor Cemetery at a later date.
