Joan Buzard Sommerville, surrounded by her daughters and granddaughter, went to God on January 18, 2016. She was born May 19, 1919 to Ed L and Rose (McMillen) Buzard.
Joan's memory is cherished by her children; daughter, Barbara JoAn and husband Sherwood Stewart, son, Bird L. Sommerville and daughter, Cheryl Rose and her late husband Gordon Flick. Our precious, courageous mother's journey on earth is remembered by those who loved her with the great joy. She radiated sunshine that fills our souls. All could depend on her strength, loyalty, generosity, intelligence, and unconditional love which endured through extreme mental and physical challenges.
Letters addressed to "Grandma Sunshine" found Joan's home. Sunshine was the name given to her by her grandson, Jeff, and the endearment was soon adopted by all her grandchildren, as well as many others whom she loved and blessed. She became "Grandma Sunshine." The joy of Joan's life was her grandchildren, Ed L and Beth Stewart, Michele and Greg Nafziger, Jeffrey and Meredith Flick and Steven Flick. Joy was multiplied by her great-grandchildren, Stewart and Esther Nafziger, William Sherwood Stewart, Jacob and Devin Nafziger, Erin Michele Nafziger, Maggie Rose Stewart, Kaitlin Nicole, Pennelope Joan, Siri Louise, Camas Rose, and Gordon Vallette Flick. Joan is also survived by a brother-in-law, George Tom Stahlman, sister-in-law, Betty Sommerville, and many deeply loved nieces and nephews. In the winter of Joan's life, special support, laughter, and warmth were given to her by nephew Bill McMillen, nieces Linda Switzer, Cindy Conn, and Leah Frisoli, and dear friends Tom and Pam Wensel.
Joan suffered the loss of many loving family members and dear friends during her long and grace filled life. Joan's greatest loss was the death of her young husband, Lloyd L. Sommerville. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Gordon Flick, her parents, Rose and Ed L. Buzard, her husband's parents, Chester and Twila Sommerville, her sisters, Julu Stahlman, June Sowers (Jess) and her brother, Jim Buzard (Gerrie). Joan lost brothers-in-law Robert Sommerville (Margaret), John "Jack" Sommerville, and Leon (Bonnie) Sommerville, and sisters-in-law, Eula Jane (Allen) Corbett, Florence (Leland) Davis, Bette Jo Sommerville, Jean (Newt) McMillen, and Donna (Paul) Bodis. Joan was also preceded in death by her nephews Jeffrey Stahlman, Paul Bodis, Jr., Jack Sommerville and John Sommerville, and nieces, Lyn Buzard and Marjorie Davis.
The First Presbyterian Church of Clarion was the loving church home cherished by Joan. Her church and her church family were her substance base and exalted treasure. Joan served as a deacon, attended the general assembly multiple times, and was chosen as Clarion's honored witness to be among the cloud of witnesses at the church-wide gathering. She readily gave service, inspiration, and love for others in the spirit of the Gospel. She initiated and led the "Special Friends" Bible Study Group for seven years. She was a loyal member of the Stitch and Chatter Group. She dearly loved every lady in her circle. The circle did not forget Joan as they brought their meeting to her home to celebrate her 96th birthday. Caring Caller cards, garden flowers, Judy's jam, Gail's stitches, Ellen's cookies, and Marilyn's rolls were special. Long term care givers Dorothy Bundy, Corkie Gourley, and Sue Plyler were loved and appreciated as were all those who gave of their time to sincere caring.
Joan was a widow at 27 with three young children. She cared for her son, a child victim of polio, for 72 years, and educated both daughters. She found many ways to support her family from home. She became an employee of Ditz Gift Shop and Hardware when her youngest daughter started school. She traveled with Mrs. Ditz on buying trips to Chicago and New York. Joan is remembered by her service to Clarion-Limestone School where she established a successful twenty-eight year career as business manager and board secretary. She warmly returned the admiration and love which her colleagues and friends gave her.
Behind Mom's home is the Wensel / Sommerville Trail. To celebrate Joan, the trail is homemade. The trail is not straight; it twists and turns as if to symbolize her ninety-six plus years. It winds with true faith that exemplifies the love of friendship. The Pure in Heart will see God. Rejoice for Joan Buzard Sommerville, our sunshine in heaven.
