Jane Hindman, 91, of Clarion died Thursday, May 10, 2018 at Oakwood Heights Oil City.
Born January 22, 1927 on the Eaker farm in Limestone Township, Clarion County, she was the daughter of James Earl and Cora Eaker Smathers.
Her family moved to Clarion so the children could attend school "in town," where Jane graduated from Clarion High School. She married Paul E. Hindman August 9, 1947 and he preceded her in death on October 7, 2002. She graduated from Clarion State Normal School in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Education.
She and her husband owned and operated the Modern Store in Clarion where Jane did all of the bookkeeping. She briefly served as director of the Clarion County Area Agency on Aging and taught English for 24 years, retiring in 1993. She touched many area students with her love for poetry and literature. She also served as a School Director for Clarion Area School District.
Jane joined the First Presbyterian Church in 1939 was the oldest surviving member at the time of her death. She taught Sunday school, was a deaconess and a member of afternoon circle and Caring Callers.
Among her hobbies were researching family genealogy and she belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution. She and her husband traveled after retirement to national parks, presidential libraries, and historical sites in New England, the West, Southwest, and the South. Their home and gardens were a particular love, especially her oval rose garden.
After her husband's death, Jane was adventurous and traveled to England, California, New York City to see her grandchildren in the St. Patrick's Day parade, and visited her brother in Louisiana and Florida.
Mrs. Hindman was the last member of her immediate family and is survived by her children, Gail (Ted) Welch, of Oil City, PA, Steve (Mary) Hindman, of Clearfield, PA, Mark (Stephanie) Hindman, of Sugarland, TX, and Bart (Sue) Hindman, of Clarion, PA; grandchildren Brandon Welch, of Atlanta, GA, Alex (Erin) Hindman, of Worcester, MA, Ryan (Andrea) Hindman, of Waltham, MA, Mike (Kristen) Hindman, of Clarion, PA, and Cate (Craig) Lewis, of Shippenville, PA; and great-grandchildren, Hayden, Carter, and Madison Hindman, Maggie, George, and Ben Lewis, and Evan Hindman. She is also survived by her niece, Catherine (Ted) Mire, and nephews, Rodney (Carole) Smathers, and Jerry (Max) Smathers.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hindman was preceded in death by her older brothers, Horace and Byron Smathers and their wives Eunice and Lorene.

Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street in Clarion where visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday preceded by visitation from 10-11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 700 Wood Street, Clarion, with Rev. Dr. Jonathan Scanlon officiating. Interment will be in the Clarion Cemetery.
