Herman Albert Stange died August 28, 2017, following an extended illness at his home in Fisher, surrounded by his wife, children, and dog.
He was born April 6, 1944, in Altoona, son of Herman A. and Sarah K. (Kane) Stange, and grew up in the Reservoir area of Hollidaysburg.
In 1968, he married Jean Schmidhamer, who survives. Herm was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sarah Dunmire of Newry. He is survived by his wife, four children: Jennifer Linn (Eric), of Pittsburgh, Rebecca Hirsch (Rick) of State College, David Stange (Michele), of Portland, OR, and Michael Stange (Laura Sanchez) of Farmville, VA; eight grandchildren: Morgan and Christopher Linn; Anna, Eva, and Ellie Hirsch; and Kate, Elise, and Hudson Stange; and his dog, Lucky.
Herm was a 1962 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School and attended Williamsport Technical Institute. He served in the United States Army as a helicopter crew chief from 1965 to 1967. With the help of his teacher, Harry Crane, he landed a job as a mechanic at Beckwith Machinery/Cleveland Brothers where he worked for forty-two years. Herm was a member of First United Methodist Church in Clarion and served two terms as head of the board of trustees. He was a two–term member of the Clarion-Limestone School Board and a longtime member of Trout Unlimited.
An avid outdoorsman, Herm loved fly fishing, hunting, backpacking, and working on his farm. He had fond memories of fishing from age five in Centre County with his father and a group of railroad men. More recently, he enjoyed backpacking in Alaska, fishing in Canada, and fly-fishing in Montana, including one trip to the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Herm was passionate about the value of an education and cited the education of his children as among his best investments.
During his extended illness, Herm was well-cared for by Dr. Kormos and the staff of the Artificial Heart Program at Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. Special thanks to the nursing staff and engineers from unit 9-D and Mary of Clarion Forest VNA Hospice.
