Harold Earl Pletcher, Jr. passed away Sunday morning, March 6, 2016 at his home in Clarion after complications from diabetes and other related medical problems. He was 74 years old.
He was born September 1, 1941 in Brookville, PA, to Harold Earl Pletcher, Sr., and his wife Thelma Lucille Burford. The family resided on Fifth Avenue in Clarion prior to building a house on Stoney Lonesome Road in 1954.
As a young man Harold worked for Bill Phero delivering groceries and later for Lloyd Mitchell, learning to cut meat. Harvest time he worked as part of a thrashing crew for both Weavers and Pasquarettes. Harold also had his own band, in which he played the drums. Harold was a member of Clarion-Limestone Class of 1959. After high school, he spent a semester at Fort Wayne, IN learning engineering and also attended Clarion State Teachers College.
Working for the highway department, Harold lived in Dayton, PA and later in Shelocta before taking a job with Owens-Illinois in their Brockport, NY plant where he eventually became senior furnace tender and shop steward. When the plant closed in 1984, Harold worked for Griffith Oil Company and then decided to make his hobby of repairing clocks his full time occupation. Harold operated a clock shop and repair business first out of his home in LeRoy, NY; then moved into 3 Mill Street, also in LeRoy, before settling into a shop in the Masonic Temple in Caledonia, NY. When he and his wife Joan moved back to Clarion in 1994, the clock business went back to being a hobby and he took a job with the First United Methodist Church as custodian. Having been raised in the church, this was a welcome fit.
Harold was a 32nd degree Mason, raised in the Scottish Rite, and serving with the Rochester Consistory where he also was a part of the local Shrine clown unit. His alter ego Duzy entertained many before shrine circus performances, nursing home residents, and children of all ages. Serving as Master of his blue lodge multiple times, Harold also worked tirelessly as part of his local Temple Association, and served as Patron of Caledonia Chapter #451 Order of the Eastern Star many times as well.
Harolds love of the outdoors found a perfect environment when he joined Boy Scouts. While scouting he earned his God and Country award and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. As an adult, Harold turned this interest into being a Scoutmaster while living in Indiana County, PA. His Explorer Scouts were known for their suspension bridge building skills and for their raft trip down the Allegheny River.
Harold is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Joan Wiant, whom he married March 3, 1963, and their daughter Pamela Lynn Speis (Nicholas) of Lowellville, OH, and two grandchildren: Nathaniel Speis and Rachel Speis also of Lowellville. Harold is also survived by two brothers: Duane Keith Pletcher (Carole) of Florida, and James Ralph Pletcher (Sharon) of Colorado. Harold was predeceased by his parents and grandparents.
