Obituary

Gerald Clifford Trainer (Jerry) 91 of Edgewood Heights, former resident of Clarion, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2015, at McKinley Health Center. Jerry was born January 26, 1924, at his family home on Wood Street, the youngest son of Clyde F Trainer and Anna M (Bish) Trainer. Jerry attended Clarion High School and joined the United States Army in June 1943. After training at Camp Clayborne, Jerry was transferred to Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah. From there he traveled to Los Alamos, NM where he was a driver and dispatcher. While in NM, Jerry transported several of the scientists working on the Manhattan Project. Jerry was present at the first testing of the atomic bomb. In April 1946, he was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant from the Army. In August of 1943, Jerry married Gladys M. Crum of Shippenville, PA in Salt Lake City, Utah. Gladys preceded him in death January 6, 1988. Jerry worked for his father at the Fairground Service Station in Clarion; he also worked at Clarion Blox, Mays Coal Company, Krohs Goodyear Tire, and he retired in 1986 from Clarion University as Fire and Safety Inspector and Auto Dispatcher after 15 years of service. Jerry was a member of the Clarion Volunteer Fire Company for many years and served as both Assistant Chief and Chief. In 1937, Jerry joined the First United Methodist Church, and in October of 2014, he was recognized as the longest active member of the church. For the 1994 Lenten season, Jerry made crosses from cherry wood that had been salvaged from damaged pew racks. Making these wooden crosses is a tradition that is still carried on today. In September of 1989, Jerry married Evelyn Hawk of Clarion. She preceded him in death June 3, 2012. Jerry loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he also loved gardening as well as working in his wood shop. He had a witty sense of humor, which will always live in our memories and hearts. He is survived by two daughters: Joyce and husband Scott Dinsmore of Costa Rica and Janice and husband Thomas Hartle of Clarion, and two step-children: Cathy and husband Robert Lucas of Minerva, Ohio and James Hawk and his companion Tony Teal of Nashville, TN. He is also survived by grandchildren: TJ Hartle of Erie, PA; Timothy and wife Jill Hartle of Taylorsville, NC; Gerald and wife Jenny Trainer of Albuquerque, NM; Jennifer and husband Benjamin Aronson of Costa Rica; and Abigail and husband James King of Phoenix, AZ. And step-grandchildren: Jeremy Lucas of Minerva, OH and Brandy and husband Jeremy Hahn of Damascus, OH. And great grandchildren: Eric Trainer, Reeghan Hartle, Sienna and Stella Aronson. And step-great grandchildren: Ashley and Jaret Hahn.In addition to his parents, brothers, sisters, and his two wives, he was preceded in death by his son Gerald Clifford (Jody) Trainer II in February 1989. Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street in Clarion where visitation will be held from 3 to 7 pm on Wed, September 9th. An additional visitation will be held from 10:30 - 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 10th at the First United Methodist Church, Wood Street, in Clarion. Military honors will be accorded by members of the Honor Guard from American Legion Post 66 of Clarion at 11:00 a.m. at the church immediately followed by funeral services with Rev. Kevin R. Haley officiating. Interment will be in the Clarion Cemetery. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Edgewood Heights and McKInley Health Center for the wonderful care and kindness during his stay. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to Clarion Volunteer Fire Company or First United Methodist Church Living Stones.
