Eugene Tenth Troese, of Clarion, passed away on April 28, 2015 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was 89 years of age.
Born on August 2, 1925 in Rimersburg, he was the son of the late Stephano and Domenica (Gagliardi) Troisi. The tenth of eleven children, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Gene graduated from Rimersburg High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was stationed at the Army base near Calcutta, India, during World War II and was in charge of base operations. He was a recipient of the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged on May 26, 1946 as Sergeant, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron 47th Air Depot Group. He was a life-long patriot.
In 1948, Gene attended plumbing school in Kansas City before joining his brothers in Troese Brothers Partnership, former owners of the Captain Loomis Inn in Clarion, the Voyager Inn in Franklin, and the Venture Inn in Corry, and the Variety Distributing Company in Clarion, where he was most well known. He continued working in the office until the business was sold in 2009.
On June 2, 1956, he married the former Zena L. Slaugenhaupt. They had recently celebrated 58 years of marriage before she preceded him in death just four weeks ago.
A familiar face around Clarion, he was well known for his friendliness and generosity to all. He loved family get-togethers, cook outs, decorating for holidays, and taking pictures with his Polaroid camera. Known as "Pap-pap" to his grand-kids, he took a very active role in their lives. Always ready with a word of advice, or to lend a hand, he will be greatly missed by his family.
Surviving are three children; Janine Frazier and her husband, Doug, of Venus, Dana Troese and his wife, Jean, of Clarion, and Diane Troese of Clarion. He is also survived by five grandchildren; Darren Troese and his fiance, Aly Delp, of Clarion, Adam and Mason Groner of Venus, and Zachary and Isabella Troese of Clarion; one step-grand-daughter, Cally Frazier, and one great-grandchild, Thayden Troese.
In addition to his parents and wife, Gene was preceded in death by his brothers; Peter, Angelo, Joseph, James, Louis, Henry, Victor, and Nicholas, and his sisters; Rose Tomasello and Mary Bologna.
Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street in Clarion where visitation will be held from1-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 3. Full military honors will be accorded by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 66 of Clarion at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. A Christian Wake service will be held at the funeral home at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, followed by a dinner in honor of both parents. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, Main Street in Clarion, on Monday, May 4, at 11:00 a.m., with Father Monty Sayers, officiating.
