Obituary

Emma Lou "Emmy" (Ditz) Summerville, recently of Clarion, formerly of Fryburg, passed away on April 5, 2019 in the intensive care unit of the Clarion Hospital following a brief illness. She was 89 years of age. She was born on January 16, 1930 in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, the only daughter of the late George and Emma (Hartle) Ditz. In 1953, she married James "Ray" Summerville, who survives. In addition to her husband, Emmy is survived by her daughter, Debra Ann and husband Sidney L. Miles, of Clarion; her five grandchildren, Ryan (Nancee) Miles of Clarion, Curtis Miles and fiancé Brittany Kriebel of Clarion, Theron Miles and fiancé Alexandra Lippett of Clarion, Sheldon Miles of Washington DC, and Kyla Miles also of Clarion; and her three great-grandchildren, Ryan Miles, Jr., Harper Miles, and Calista Miles, all of Clarion. She is also survived by her brother Carl A. Ditz; two cherished sisters-in-law, Nancy B. Ditz and Maxine Lauer; and an extended family of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, George A. Ditz, Frank E. Ditz, and Augustin A. Ditz. A 1947 graduate of Shippenville High School, Emmy promptly went to work for her father at the First United National Bank in Fryburg. During her 53 year career with the F.U.N. Bank, she held many jobs and posts including those at the teller windows and in the loan department. She was quite adept with bookkeeping and numbers; managing her own checkbook and doing her own taxes as recently as this last year. Emmy was a member of St. Michael's Church in Fryburg and she attended Immaculate Conception Church in Clarion. Her faith was an anchor in her life. She often prayed the Rosary for and with her family and those for whom she cared deeply. Her marriage and her family were another source of strength and joy for Emmy. She believed that family traditions are important and "keeping the family gathered in" around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. She was an incredible cook having a collection of cookbooks numbering in the thousands. Her Christmas Eve buffets and Christmas day prime rib dinners were legendary. During the rest of the year, she always had a meal prepared when someone dropped by to visit. Emmy relished the time spent talking with her family; either in person or on the phone. She was a terrific grandmother, wanting to know what the grandchildren's plans were, or into what mischief they were getting themselves. Emmy loved a good story and had a lively sense of humor. Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street in Clarion where visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. with a Christian Wake service at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Church, 715 Main Street in Clarion with Rev.
