Obituary

Dr. Dick Richard Henry Stoneback, Sr. of Tripps Lane, Strattanville, PA died on October 25, 2014 at the DuBois Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born in East Greenville, PA on May 12, 1933, the son of William Henry Stoneback and Laura Neiman Stoneback. He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Marge Margaret Louise Stoneback (nee Stevenson), his college sweetheart. They were married on May 12, 1955 and within a few years were blessed with three children, Rick, Randy and Peggy, then later became foster parents to a fourth child, Gary Bosarge. As a devoted family man and loving father, his children were his pride and joy. Following his graduation from Quakertown High School in 1951, Dr. Stoneback matriculated to Pennsylvania State University where he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and earned his Bachelor of Science degree. He continued his studies at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School and earned his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1958. Soon after his graduation, he and Marge purchased a farm in Oxford, PA where he established a thriving veterinary practice, specializing in large animal medicine. Early in his career, he was on the staff of the UPenn Veterinarian School and mentored many students by having them ride along with him on his veterinary calls. He remained a practicing veterinarian in Oxford for forty-five years, eventually bringing into the practice his eldest son, Rick, also a UPenn Veterinary School graduate. An Arabian horse breeder for over fifty years, Dr. Stoneback was a key promoter of the breed from its infancy in the United States, encouraging its nurture and development beginning in the early 1950s while establishing his own Amyr Arabians breeding program. His efforts combined with those of a small group of like-minded foundation breeders made possible the vast scope of Arabian horse oriented activities available today. He was a well respected authority on the Crabbet bloodline of Arabian horses and was instrumental in its development and preservation. His son, Randy, continues the successful breeding program his father established. Dr. Stoneback was a member of the Arabian Horse Foundation. He was a charter member and past President of the Eastern Crabbet Arabian Horse Society. In 1976, he founded The Eastern Amateur Arabian Horse Show Circuit. He also was an expert in the breeding of dairy goats and a member of the American Dairy Goat Association. In 2003, the Stonebacks sold their Oxford farm and relocated to their current facility in Strattanville, PA. Soon thereafter, they became members of the First Baptist Church of Clarion. A man of strong Christian faith, in 1988 Dr. Stoneback had helped to establish The Lighthouse Youth Center in Oxford, PA and served on their Board of Directors for many years. With a goal to be a friend of the children of Oxford and to share with them the love of Jesus Christ, the center opened as a game room and snack bar to provide a safe place for children to spend their time after school. The organization has continued to grow, and now provides many needed services including help with homework, teaching children about nutrition, and training in cooking and computer skills. The Lighthouse Center also serves hearty meals to over 300 children each week. In retirement, Dr. Stoneback enjoyed many pursuits. Principal among them was raising a wide variety of animals, and he continued to study horse and goat pedigrees with the same keen eye and wealth of knowledge that had produced many champions for Amyr Arabians. He also enjoyed reading and gardening, and he loved to cook and was an excellent chef, often treating his friends and family to elaborate meals while entertaining them with his humor and stories. Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Peggy Beardmore, and her husband, Paul, of Severna Park, MD; a son, Randy Stoneback, and his partner, Laura Anderson, of Strattanville, PA; a daughter-in-law, Donna Stoneback, of Oxford, PA; six grandchildren, Ricky and Samantha Stoneback, Drew and Michael Beardmore, Justin Stoneback and Misty Brown; and a great granddaughter, Charlotte Rose Stoneback. Also surviving are two sisters, Pat Worthington, and her husband Kenneth of Doylestown, PA, and Laurene Hunsicker, and her husband Ray of Canton, PA, and an aunt, Lila Bittenbender, of Red Hill, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Dr. Richard H. Stoneback, Jr. and Gary Bosarge, and a sister, Doris Steich. A memorial service will be held on Saturday November 1st at 1:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Clarion, 649 Main St, Clarion, PA 16214 with Senior Pastor Rev. Jason Hunter officiating.
