Obituary

Daniel K. Shirey, Jr. Ed.D., of Stoney Lonesome Road, Clarion, passed away peacefully at his home on the evening of Monday, December 3, 2018 at the age of 89. He was born on January 31, 1929 at Greensburg, PA, a son of the late Daniel K., Sr. and Marian (Kurtz) Shirey. On February 17, 1955, he married the former Willa Mae Dodson. Together they raised a family of four sons and celebrated 61 years of marriage before she preceded him in death in 2016. Dr. Shirey is survived by his four sons, Daniel K., III and wife Juliet of Herndon, VA, Thomas and wife Catherine, of Lynchburg, VA, Timothy D., and wife Patti of Ambler, PA, and Mark W., and wife Wendy, of Bellevue, NE. He is also survived by his many grandchildren, Austin Shirey and wife Sarah of Centerville, VA, Emily Shirey Radke and husband Jon of Lynchburg, VA, Tracey and Tarah Parker of Bellevue, NE, Michael Shirey and wife Sarah of Chicago, IL, Kaitlyn and Matthew Shirey of Ambler, PA, and Nathaniel and Joshua Shirey of Herndon, VA. He has been preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a sister, Annette McHugh. Dr. Shirey served three years with the United States Army. He attended St. Vincent and Seton Hill Colleges, the University of Pittsburgh, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the Pennsylvania State University with his Bachelor of Science. He also received his Master of Science and Doctor of Education degrees from PSU. He served for a year as psychologist at the PA Industrial School in Camp Hill, eight years as school psychologist in the Lackawanna County (PA) schools, and 26 years as Professor of Special Education at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, retiring in 1990. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 16817 Route 68, Sligo, PA 16255-4145. Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street, Clarion where visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with Pastor Robert Hranicky of Bethel Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be alongside his wife at the National Cemetery at Fort Indian Town Gap.
