Obituary

Avonelle E. Ray, 92, of Clarion, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family on September 4, 2018 at Highland Oaks at Water Run. Born in Indiana, PA on September 27, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Stella (Cost) Barry. She was a 1943 graduate of Indiana High School and attended Indiana State Teachers College. Then, after working at the college a few years, she married Thomas G. Ray, also from Indiana. Together, they raised a family of six children. He preceded her in death in 1998. With children at home, "Avie" was a Girl Scout leader, Avon lady and later assisted her husband with the operation of a grocery store they purchased in New Bethlehem in 1970. Avonelle enjoyed reading, playing the piano, playing cards (especially Bridge), golfing, watching the Pirates and wintering in Oro Valley, AZ. She was a long time member of the New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church where she served as Elder and more recently a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Clarion. She also attended Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church in Tucson, AZ and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. In addition to her parents and husband, Avonelle was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara (Michael) Santini, in 1992 and a granddaughter, Sarah Yuscavage, in 2004. She is survived by four daughters, Sandra (Cliff) Dilling of East Palestine, OH, Elizabeth (Chris) Eichner of Minden, NV, Patricia (Mike) Pratt of Shepherdstown, WV, Pamela (Joe) Yuscavage of Mountain Top, PA and a son, Thomas (Marsha) Ray of Clarion, PA. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren, Aaron (Rita) Santini of Ft. Collins, CO, Marcus (Veronica) Santini of Tucson, AZ, Bryan Spangler of Baden, PA, Scott Spangler of East Palestine, OH, Adrienne Eichner of Burbank, CA, Kelly (Will) McConnell of Finksburg, MD, Susan (Chris) Windsor of Thurmont, MD, John Hartman of Frederick, MD, Emily and Allison Yuscavage of Mountain Top, PA, Hannah Ray of Pittsburgh, PA and Lucas Ray of Tokyo, Japan. She is also survived by several great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 700 Wood St., Clarion, PA 16214, the New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, 403 Penn St., New Bethlehem, PA or to a charity of one's choice. The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the staff of Highland Oaks at Water Run for their exceptional service and kindness shown to Avie over the past two years. Also special thanks to the caring & supportive people at WRC In-Home Solutions and WRC Hospice. Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory in Clarion. A private service for family will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Indiana, PA.
