Anthony Wayne Tony Banner, 53, of Westwood Drive, Clarion, died unexpectedly on September 2nd at the Clarion Hospital.
Tony was born on October 18, 1957, in Clarion, a son of Charles and Ethel (Schmader) Banner. He grew up in Marble and graduated from Keystone High School in 1975.
Tony graduated from Williamsport Area Community College in 1977. He went to work for Texas Instruments in Houston TX until 1979. Tony then graduated from Clarion University in 1981 with a bachelors of business administration. Mr. Banner was the sales representative for the Northwestern Pennsylvania district with IKON Office Solutions for 30 years.
On July 18, 1981, he married the former Betty Jo Staab of Clarion, who survives.
Tony was an avid sports fan, loved traveling and spending time with his family. He was a loyal fan of Pittsburgh sports and a devout follower of Clarion University Athletics. Tony enjoyed watching local youth grow through athletics and saw sports as a positive way to develop their character. He believed in continuous self-growth and did so by being very active in the lives his own children and by being a second father to many.
Mr. Banner was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Clarion, serving as a trustee, usher, and member of the Living Stone Committee. Tony was past president of Clarion Area High School girls and boys basketball boosters and was also active in volleyball boosters. Tony was an active volunteer with the YMCA of Clarion County.
Tony was preceded in death by his father, Charles, and a brother Robert.
In addition to his wife Betty Jo Banner of Clarion, daughter Lindsay Banner of Baltimore, MD, and son Andrew Banner of Dallas, TX, Tony is survived by his mother, Ethel Banner of Marble; his brother Ted and wife Nancy Banner of Wentlings Corner, nephews Ted and Lisa Banner of Pleasantville, PA, Jeff and Briana Banner of Cranberry Township, PA, and Chris and Sara Banner of Camp Hill, PA; mother-in-law Margaret Staab of Clarion, PA; sister-in-law Peggy Jo Staab of Clarion, PA; a sister-in-law, Mary Jo and her husband Thomas Barger of Pickerington, OH, nephew Matthew Barger of Norfolk, VA, and a niece Melissa Barger of Pickerington, OH.
The family suggests the memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Clarion or to the Clarion Area High School Sports Boosters.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 5 from 7-9 pm, and Tuesday, September 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory on Wood Street in Clarion. Funeral services will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church on Wood Street in Clarion, Wednesday, September 7 at 11:00 am with the Rev. Dr. Daryl Larsen, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Clarion Cemetery.
