Catherine J. Smith
July 23, 1917 – December 2, 2009
Clarion County lost one of its best and most caring citizens when on Wednesday, December 2nd at 3:00 AM our Lord in Heaven assuredly received the loving spirit of Catherine J. Smith of Clarion.
Born July 23, 1917 in Piney Township Clarion County, she was the daughter of the late Marvin E. Smith and Catherine Murray Smith.
Kate was a Christian follower and active member of the First United Methodist Church in Clarion. She offered her time as a volunteer for numerous church activities, Bible study and community functions. Kate was also a member of the Clarion Historical Society, Quarter Century and Gold Emblem Club of Owens.
Beloved by everyone that knew Kate, she was known to all as “Aunt Kate” or more affectionately since childhood as “Babe”
Catherine attended and graduated from Sligo High School in 1934 and afterwards worked in Grove City, Pittsburgh and Cumming Diesel in Etna.
With a strong attachment to family and rural life, Kate returned to Clarion in 1944. Kate’s employment positively complimented the workforce of Owens-Illinois for 36 years. Kate’s personality and core personal beliefs won the affections of O-I co-workers who voted her to represent O-I employees in Union / O-I company relations for many, many years.
Kate’s fondness of athletics and camaraderie with her O-I co-workers included spirited softball leagues and she was especially proud of her peers acknowledging her as a serious and accomplished league bowler. She also loved to grow and nurture roses.
Although Kate had no children, Aunt Kate built meaningful and guiding relationships with her sibling’s children. Kate fostered a motherly and intimate relationship with each of her twelve nieces and nephews. Kate was also a mentor and surrogate motherly figure to acquaintances everywhere, young and old.
In addition to her parents, her brother Jack E. Smith, James O. Smith, and niece Beth Ann Smith preceded Kate in death. Robert E Smith of Sun City Arizona and twelve nieces and nephews and several grand nieces and nephews survive Kate.
Kate will be interred into the Shamburg Cemetery in Piney Township with her Mother and Father. There will be no viewing or memorial service. Kate asked that any memorial offerings to be directed to Country Springs in Sligo or the First United Methodist Church in Clarion.
The Goble Funeral Home & Crematory, 330 Wood St, Clarion was in charge of arrangements. On line obituaries can be sent at www.goblefh.net.
